Aluminum fuel cells use aluminum as the negative electrode (anode), oxygen as the positive electrode (cathode), and potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) aqueous solution as the electrolyte.
In the early days, pure aluminum was mostly used as anode material for aluminum fuel cells, but due to the strong passivation effect of pure aluminum, the polarization was serious, which would cause the polarization of the anode to increase, the potential to shift and the voltage to lag. Therefore, most current aluminum fuel cells use aluminum alloy as the negative electrode.
